Water is an essential macronutrient
Is water an essential macronutrient?
Water is an essential macronutrient and is vital for all forms of life. Without adequate water intake the body lacks the energy sufficient to complete the bodies’ processes, and this can lead to dehydration and a host of chronic or inflammatory conditions. The necessary water intake can vary based on climate and level of exercise. Generally speaking, the average person needs around half of their body weight in fluid ounces to be consumed for adequate daily water intake. Drinking water that is sanitary or purified is ideal. There are many methods of purifying water including filtration, distillation, and the reverse osmosis process. Unfortunately, up to one billion people in the world still lack access to clean water. Over 2.5 billion don’t have access to sanitary conditions.
Tap water may not be the most ideal option because in some locations the water is exposed to toxic chemicals, organisms, and even pharmaceutical drugs. Before you drink tap water in your area it is important to conduct some research on water safety. Bottled water promoted by an array of companies, can sometimes be no better than tap water. If you purchase water it’s important to do research on the companies to ensure that their production process meets the highest standards. Plastic bottled water can contain BPAa, a chemical that can leech from the plastic into the water. These can have negative effects on your long-term health. To avoid BPA, you can purchase BPA-free bottles, glass jars, or other BPA-free containers to carry water with you on-the-go. Despite potential for toxicity, tap and bottled water is an essential macronutrient and should be your go-to drink!
